Hormonal changes and sleep deprivation have a significant effect on the human body. Baby blues are a common and temporary experience which include feelings of mood swings, tearfulness and anxiety (affecting up to 80% of birthing parents). They usually occur a few days after birth and settle within a week or two. If you are experiencing more severe symptoms or they are prolonged you may be experiencing post partum anxiety or depression. These conditions are common, with 1 in 5 women being diagnosed after giving birth. It is also not uncommon to experience symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Some women experience adverse feelings during the milk let down (Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex - D-MER). This is thought to be due to dopamine levels and has a hormonal basis.

If you are struggling to enjoy the time you spend with your baby that is a sign that you could benefit from seeking professional help.

Mental health support from an experienced GP can be invaluable. We can discuss therapy options, and if medication is required we can manage this in a way that is safe for you and your baby, and allows you to maintain your breastfeeding relationship.
